Social Studies - Learning about States

In social studies, we are learning about how a state functions through a game about how a house functions. The students are learning that running and maintaining a house takes a lot of work and responsibility - just like a state! Here are some terms the students are learning about through the game:

State - the territory, or one of the territories, of a government.

Taxes - money paid to the government for its support or for specific facilities or services.

Insurance - means of guaranteeing against loss or harm; a type of security.

Utilities - a public service, as a telephone or electric-light system, a streetcar or railroad line, or the like.

Voting - a formal expression of opinion or choice, either positive or negative, made by an individual or body of individuals.
